Novo Nordisk Foundation Lecture Prize

Novo Nordisk Foundation Lecture Prize

Diabetes In Focus

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Lecture Prize was established in 1979 and is awarded to an active scientist from a Nordic country for an outstanding contribution within research or treatment related to diabetes. The winner is invited to hold a lecture to coincide with the annual conference of the Scandinavian Society for the Study of Diabetes. The scientist is selected to give the lecture. The accompanying award of DKK 600,000 (€80,000) is distributed as a personal award of DKK 100,000 and an award for research or development work of DKK 500,000. The award is donated by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

This prize was originally known as the Jacob E. Poulsen Grant. Poulsen (1907–1988) was a senior hospital physician, a key figure in the history of the Foundation and Chair of the Board from 1976 to 1979. The Lecture Prize was established to recognize and appreciate his lifelong contribution to treatment and research related to diabetes and his inspirational example to young physicians and researchers. Responsibility for the Lecture Prize was transferred to the Scandinavian Society for the Study of Diabetes in 1986, and in 1996 the name was changed to the current name.

The Lecture Prize is awarded by a committee comprising three members from the the Committee on Endocrinology and Metabolism of the Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Chair of the Scandinavian Society for the Study of Diabetes.
