Our funding areas

Contributing to society

The Novo Nordisk Foundation awards grants for projects based on applications it receives in open competition and for projects for which the Foundation takes the initiative. The aim is to improve people’s lives by improving health, education and developing a knowledge-based, sustainable society.

Art helps to challenge dogmas. We support areas including research within art history and the crossroads between art and science.

Biomedicine and health sciences

Our largest grant area. This includes research that advances knowledge on health and treatment of disease.

In response to global environmental challenges, we support biotechnology research that can contribute to developing a more sustainable world.

Conferences, symposia and workshops

We support the holding of scientific events to promote knowledge-sharing and networking activities within research and innovation.

Education and outreach

We support education and outreach projects that can promote education in the natural sciences in Denmark.

Life science innovation and entrepreneurship

We want to support scientific discoveries being further developed into new products and solutions to benefit people and the environment.

Natural and technical science research and interdisciplinarity

We support research fields including chemistry, physics and information technology because these are important for advances within health and sustainability.

Patient-centered and research-based care

We support research-based treatment and prevention of diabetes, one of the greatest global health challenges.

Social and humanitarian initiatives

Wishing to improve the opportunities for disadvantaged children and young people through education, competency development and better health, the Novo Nordisk Foundation supports social initiatives in Denmark as well as humanitarian efforts in selected geographical areas internationally.

Social science research

We support research that can create new knowledge on how spending money on research affects society and the economy.
